Dryer vent cleaning should be done annually. The lint catcher inside your dryer. Many homeowners are not aware that the dryer lint trap should be cleaned after every use. Dryer lint is highly flammable and can start a house fire with a very small spark. Cleaning your lint trap is crucial to helping to prevent dryer fires.
Replace your dryer vent cap: Dryer vent caps stop working over time. When this happens birds and rodents sometimes build nest in the dryer vent hose to keep warm and out of the elements.
Dryer lint gets trapped along the walls of the dryer hose and slows the flow of air. When the flow is not clear it gets increasingly hot inside the hose increasing the risk of dryer fire.
Because dryer lint is so highly flammable it is important to clean the vent hose annually. This foil flexi hose is the most flammable of all hose types.
When selecting a dryer vent hose you should chose one that bends but it also rigid or semi rigid. Plastic and foil hoses should be replaced immediately.
Extend the life of your dryer by making sure it is vented properly. When dryer vents are clogged it causes the dryer to over heat. If your dryer is getting hot on top that is a sign it's clogged. If you have to run multiple drying cycles, that is another indicator. Dryer fires may not be 100% preventable but you can do your part in reducing our risk by having it done professionally once a year.
Hiring a CSIA Certified Exhaust Technician® means you are trusting your home and family to someone who has spent countless hours studying for (and passing) an extensive exam covering everything from the proper inspection and maintenance of dryer vents to the applicable codes and standards relating to these systems.
